The chassis number codes for the early years is straight forward: 924 is the model. 8 is 1978. Then the  fifth digit is either 1, 2, or 3 for the model version; 1 is Europe/RestOfWorld, 2 is USA, 3 is Japan. All followed by the 5 digit serial number.

Purchased in 1996 , as a quietly rusting , poorly running , Silver and rust near basket case with only 62000 miles for $1200.00, this car is a work in progress. in late 96 through spring of 1997 the body was stripped to bare metal, the rust was ground out and repaired and the car was painted a two tone semi matallic candy apple brandywine custom color. depending on the lighting the color shifts from almost hot pink, to a dark purple. the hood has two subtle racing strips which fade and blend in to match the darker lower body. in late 97 the transaxle was pulled and replaced, and in spring of 1998 the engine was rebuilt from the bottom up. A monza exhaust flowing through the stock manifold was also added. the car was used as a dailly driver throughout . during this time a kenwood stereo, pioneer "6 pack" cd player and all new kenwood speakers were installed (front, rear, and two in the "flaps " in the rear hatch). a digital cb radio was hidden in the dash shelf (no a/c in this car) and the cd controls reside where the original center speaker lived. an after market power antenea replaced the original non powered hirsch, and i installed an audi sunroof switch to make it go up and down , in the center console (where the newer sunroof switches would live). Dual fog/driving lights were installed and a dual throw illuminated rocker in the factory location gives them juice. A whistler Banshee Alarm system with all the toys discourages the bad guys. the brake lights were modified to utilize the "rear foglight" spaces and a late model third brakelight was also added. the rear was modified to "snap" to the side walls and elliminate the plastic clips, and the cd changer also snaps onto the hatch carpet for quick removal. in late 98 i added acura integra bucket seats, replaced all of the marker lights, turn signal lighting, sunroof seal, and lots of little rubber pieces. the factory luggage cover is attached to the hatch by special aftermarket brackets (cover goes up when the hatch is open). a Cheap dash cover disguises the cracked dash (for now), and a hard wired whistler radar detector reminds me to do the speed limit. in late 98" mechanical problems side lined the car, and in early 99, while be transported the car rolled down a steep hill into a gully. presently it is under repair and should be rolling again shortly. the car should see turbo mud gaurds and instrumentation, a new carpet, a custom chin spoiler , a bored out throttle body, new windsheild, some sort of paint solution to fix what was damaged and maybe even an autocross or or two before the end of summer 99.

I bought my 1978 924 in late October of 2001. I paid only $200. It had a fuel leak but I fixed it right away. It now sits in my garage while I look for a rear bumper for it so I can fully restore it and take it out on the road. Red Ext, Beige Int.

This 924 was originally sold at Hoffman Porsche in East Hartford Connecticut in May of 1978. I bought it in 1999 to be a project I could work on in my spare time. It quickly became an obsession. The old paint was stripped and a clearcoat finish of G.M. white with a pearl additive was applied. A hatch from an 87 924S with spoiler replaced the stock glass unit. The 4 speed transmission was replaced with a 5 speed Audi-based gearbox from an 82 924. The stock 8 spoke wheels have been refinished with a clearcoat system by Duracolor called 'Steel Wheels'. A new carpet by Ohio Automat was installed, and a custom headliner was cut and glued into place. The bottom end of the engine has never been touched and it still gets 28 m.p.g.

78johnson.jpg (30249 bytes)This colorful beast started out sitting in a field across from the school I taught at for a few years. Finally I couldn't stand it anymore and picked it up for $300. Turns out that all it needed was a new fuel pump, easy right? Well, to make a long story not so long, I'd been out of SCCA events for a few years and was itching to build a new car....voila! The car recieved masssive liposuction (down to about 2005 lbs give or take)a fuel safe 8 gallon fuel cell replaces the old tank, custom built roll cage, kirkey racing seat, RCI 5 point harness, cross drilled front rotors, carbon-kevlar pads and shoes, 13" ultralight racing wheels from Paulsen wheels in Ca., 13"x 9.5" slicks (the gear ration in this thing is UNREAL!), 3" heavy duty racing studs pressed into the rotors and drums, a serious autocross/roadrace cam from Paeco, Bilstein shocks and struts, 250' springs, MSD Ignition, and two big fat 48mm sidedrafts sitting up top, all in which make this car SCREAM!!! (The paint job makes it a little faster too) I compete mainly in autocrosses along the East Coast and occasionally in the mid-west/Ohio region. If anybody has any questions on how to do any of these to there car, please let me know, I'd be happy to help out. I also have many spare parts left over so if you need anything, I probably have it. Remember, of all the Wolves in the Black Forest, this is the one in sheeps clothing....

47,870 original miles, Alpine White. Driven once a week, cleaned, garaged, and covered.

My father-in-law bought this car in Germany while he was stationed there in the seventies. He actually watched it assembled on the production line! The car was then shipped over when they returned to the states.

When he bought a '66 356 and a '96 993, he bequeathed the car to his daughter who had grown up with the car. We are now taking care of it for our daughter to own someday. The car is in excellent shape, and I think it may be the cleanest 924 around (although now that I've said that I am sure someone else has one cleaner!).

Aside from the intermittent windshield wipers, the car has been a joy to own and drive.

4 speed(160,000 miles) and still purring. The original burnt orange or coppertone of the 924 exterior was taken down to the metal and painted black. We fondly call the 924, Black Beauty. The interior was also redone in a tan cloth, soon to be replaced by leather. We redid the dash in brown leather. The wheels are alluminum alloy slotted. The car has over 160,000 miles and runs great but soon I will make some modifications to improve performance. I lve driving this car as it is a piece of work. The handling is excellent.

I am in the process of re-doing and (modifying) my 1978 924 Porsche. To start with, I need information on a problem I am having with the fuel system I need a photograph of the internal fuel pump and the external fuel pump. Either the Haynes Porsche manual is wrong or the photos off a computer car parts store is wrong, or some "want to be mechanic" must have put an internal fuel tank pump under the wheel well of my 924 before I bought it, but the external pump in the picture from the auto parts store looks like the internal pump that is under the wheel well of the 924. Any suggestions or anything I should know before I start tearing both pumps off?

I am parting out two '78 924, and one '80 924. At least two good engines, (2 have sat a long time), and three trans--one 5-speed, spiderweb rims, one rear glass w/foil, 2 'porsche' rear center light panels, 'T' sport steering wheel, mufflers, among the rest of their parts. 3 cars and a fourth worth of extra parts. At this time, one car runs and needs some tlc. the others have not been run in
a while. three old ones could make two good ones and then some. All three cars are practically whole, but need restoration in varying degrees. I bought them for three grand. I'd sell all together for $1400.00us/obo or part out  otherwise. Make me a reasonable offer, I am in need of cash to repair more pressing issues in my life. write Scott at smwilling@hotmail.com

The car was not in running condition at the time of purchase, and I was able to get it for the cost of repairs. So far, the car has been a real project. Main replacements include air intake boot, fuel accumulators, fuel pump, all belts, thermostat and electric fan thermoswitch, brakes/pads and shoes all around, injectors, distributor wires, battery, valve cover gasket, tires and head lamps. Although it leaks like a sieve, it is now roadworthy and very fun to drive. Unfortunately, due to a problem with the central 2 cylinders, I cannot get it to pass smog. I'm looking to rebuild the engine this summer, as well as replace the exhaust, muffler, and catalytic converter. The interior is in decent condition but all windows will probably need replacement due to  clouding. After having a tear in the driver's door hinge welded, entry and exit from the car are a snap! Lastly, replacement of the rest of the leaky gaskets will make this car a great everyday driver. The car is brown, needing only minor bodywork, but all new paint. It's my baby!

Resent additions to this

Mostly into 914's (I own two), but found a very nice 924 on the street for sale and couldn't pass it up. The transaxle has some noise but otherwise the car is perfect. It handles as well as my 914's and is a much better daily driver. This car is very fun and very practical at the same time. I like its looks too, both from inside and outside. I can't wait to autocross it. I wouldn't change a thing in its design.

Red, sunroof, typical 4 speed. 76K miles. Am in the process of rebuilding the engine to include euro pistons, recurved distributor, quick trip headers. Have euro race cam and adjustable timing sprocket, but since my head is a new rebuild with a 1 year warranty I'll wait another year to try those out.

I have replaced both front fenders during the restoration, front upper and lower valance and headlight covers. Installed a new rear valance to cover the spare tire etal. It has a rear tail light enclosure between the turn signals. The car was chemically stripped and various dents fixed as part of the restoration.I am the third owner. It currently has 144,000 miles and is hibernating for the winter in a barn about 5 miles from our home with a full belly of gas(oline). I, the Owner, am a much used 53 yr male with many thousands  of frequent flyer miles and am falically challenged This restoration, for mental sanity reasons, was done over an eight month period and consumed many if not all the Saturdays that would have otherwise been allocated to 'Honey Do'. Although 924's are the 'orphan child' of the water pumping Porsche crowd, I won third place in the Annual Father's Day Concour held by the CT. Valley Region this past year. What does one have to do to win First? Purchase a 944?! If you need any other information, just drop me a line and I would be more than happy to provide.

Here are the modifications that have been made so far (I know it is crazy but it is a challenge):
XE California rebuilt engine - Converted to Automatic and still an auto even with the turbo! 944 Suspension and Brakes w 15" tires coockie cutters - Custom Exhaust  - Webber Big Throat (Removed it upon installing the Turbo, But reinstalled it and what a difference) - Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge - Flow sensor off early 80's Golf (gives more fuel for the same air and does not go dangoursly lean on part throttle, this was verified by the O2 sensor and the A/F gauge. It also works good with turbo so far (tested at 6 psi boost so far) - BAE after market Turbo Kit with RAJAY Turbocharger: - Alternaor remains in place (has to be moved back about an inch with the Air pump Engines) - Exhaust manifold Just one tube with a flange almost on top of the Alternator - The turbocharger boltts to This manifold - A return Exhaust line comes out of the turbo and and goes under and parralel to the exhaust manifold and then drops down and under the car just like the stock exhaust pipe - Pipes or tubes intercept the intake to go to the turbo and out of it to the throttle body. - Oil Lines from the Sending unit and return line to the Oil Pan. - Tremendous Heat Arround the Turbocharger so I bought a heat shield cloth about 2'x4' for $56 and wrapped the turbo and part of the exhaust (so far). - Reused an old Vaccum and fuel pump tester gauge (local normal parts) which reads vaccum in inHg and Pressure in psi up to 10 psi. - So far I went up to 6psi (smoking and all) and it felt like I was flying. - Bought an Intercooler off an Audi Turbo car ($5 from salvage!!!) but not installed yet
79 924 Mike also has this car trying to make it street legal.

I just bought my 924 in January from the third owner. Sometime in the past, it was repainted (badly!)the original copper color and the fuel injector was replaced with a Weber carb. I'm about to rebuild the engine and would welcome any advice on the rebuild or the Weber setup. Other than the carb and a Sony CD player, the car is pretty much stock and a blast to drive!!!
