The VIN/chassis number codes for the early years is straight forward: 924 is the model. 7 is 1977. Then the  fifth digit is either 1, 2, or 3 for the model version; 1 is Europe/RestOfWorld, 2 is USA, 3 is Japan. All followed by the 5 digit serial number. The serial number starts over for each model year and country.

This works for us to separate the cars and learn how they differed. See how Niclas' car moves to the beginning of our listing because it is a 'Euro': 924y1nnnnn.

Number 774: Arctic silver, black interior, four bolt Porsche spiderweb wheels, 195 front 205 rear, XK engine, 944 rear window and spoiler, aftermarket front spoiler. The car gave me some trouble at first but after a new clutch, new brakes, new steering column and one new valve I hope my troubles are over for a while. I drove around in the 924 all winter and it never complained, we get temperatures around -25C here in Finland so I think this old Porsche did quite well... I hope to paint the car black and get Porsche cup wheels + spacers next winter. If anyone knows anything about the history of this car please e-mail me.

I am currently involved in a complete restoration and have installed a small block chevy and I am interested in selling my 924 XK engine. It was rebuilt during the restoration prior to the idea of the engine swap. I placed an add in the panorama magazine with no response and was thinking I am not reaching the proper market audience. Please feel free to Email me with any suggestions. thanks Adam

77powers.jpg (40571 bytes) I have owned this car for nine years, and although not driven daily, it is much loved and NOT FOR SALE!! I am told it was one of the first batch shipped to Australia. It was fitted with A/C and electronic ignition, along with a Pioneer stereo-(all still working fine after 24 years!!) Original yellow tyre pressure decal, along with red/silver octane rating decal still there. The only thing not working is the oil pressure guage light!! I always say I'll get round to it!) Can any one confirm where the battery should be on this car? I've been told it should be in the back under the carpet somewhere but it lives in the well below the windshield on the left side being RH drive. No plans to do anything to this car-just enjoy it, then pass it on to my Daughter!!!! PS date cast on air manifold is 20/12/76-first registered on the road here 3/77. I bought my '77 for $800 on an impulse and I had no idea what I was getting into! It had a poor repaint, the interior looked like a rabid pit-bull got into it, but the engine and tranny were pretty sound. I'm normally a water-cooled VW man, but now I'm HOOKED! It now has a fresh coat of '95 Porsche Speed Yellow paint, a BEAUTIFUL new leather interior (Parchment), a MOMO steering wheel, a new (stock) suspension, new Falken (205 60 HR 14) tires, Rear valance, and a front "chin" spoiler. Future upgrades will include a Weltmeister sport suspension, engine upgrades, 928 "phone dial" rims, and my ultimate goal for this car, a 924 Carrera GT body package. ( I know, I'm a big dreamer) I don't have a scanner right now, I will send a photo of my '77 with the current enhancements later. I'm always updating and upgrading this car, so feel free to e-mail me at vws4two@aol.com  or @yahoo.com .

Got this car a in High School, after blowing the engine up (Hey I was 17) and eating a valve, I had the entire engine blueprinted, balanced and bumped out "Just" a little. The valves were worked over. I put dual double body oversized del-orto carbs with many raced derived fuel system parts from a local race car supplier. The carbs put so much air and fuel into the engine that it bogged below 2500 rpm but flew above it, I put a custom cam and mechanical "001" distributor into it. The exhaust system is a custom Stainless Steel system with headers ending in an original 944 Turbo Muffler. The transmission could not handle this so after it blew up, I changed the center torque tube with one from a late model 944 Turbo and had the 4 speed transmission rebuilt using custom racing gears and syncros.

In the past 12 years I have owned the car I have also modified the suspension. "poly" bushings were installed to replace the rubber ones, corner balancing and new racing struts/shock/coils help a lot. I plan on putting more suspension modifications in as I have the money. I just purchased two new cv axes to replace the original ones that were rebuilt about 8 years ago. I put them on pretty soon.

Exterior wise I have added a fiberglass oversized rear spoiler( started to crack about 2 years ago, should be easy to "re-glass") and have a turbo style front header panel with the vents feeding the carbs. The car spent most of the past few years near the ocean so it is beginning to pit in the lower front fenders. I have repainted the car it's original yellow a twice and tried to clean up the pits on the fenders, but they keep coming back. So I just obtained 2 new fenders. Just have to paint them (something to do in the spring). The interior needs carpet and seats (not bad, but not perfect. Next year's project)

This car was built on 08/76 in teal green with the black and grey interior, over the years this car has been silver, and is now red. The car has a aftermarket Turbo system ( by BEA ), and a mint 81 turbo hood and front nose panel, this car has been in Canada for about 15 years, before that ??? If anyone knows about this turbo system please E-mail me. Or I will remove it and the turbo hood and nose and sell them, to put the car back the way the factory built it.

Just purchased my first Porsche 924. Got a smokin' deal, I found it sitting in someone's back yard. Asked and I received!! Unfortunately the car had been sitting for two years and the owner could not find the keys. But I got the mechanics to check it out first and they said it was "solid". So if anyone can help me find a way to get new keys or some way to get it re-keyed it would be very much appreciated.

It is in the process of undergoing some modifications at this time. I am installing brakes from a 1984 924 along with suspension mods. this car was in storage for about 9 years and would run about 35 MPH when purchased, bad gas. Well, I just crashed it last week. 924's don't seem to respond well to big trees hitting them just behind the door. The car's pretty bent up. After I just spent $$$ getting the motor rebuilt last summer to Euro specs (125 HP) I'm trying to find another with a good body that I can transplant everything into to keep my costs down. It's got tan full leather interior, four speed, MOMO wheel, and lots of new CIS parts I put into it. Before the crash I found top speed to be about 128 (it's tough to find level ground here in western MA), not too fast but rock solid. It looks like this summer is going to be dedicated to the 'surgery' after I find a good donor car. I've got plans already for the new one, Black exterior, 205/60 tires, replace my rear yellow Koni's (I bent one, that makes me really mad), find a snailshell type 5 speed. I'm going to post the process on a web page once I get things rolling. I'll keep this updated... -Nick D.

I will send in a photo as soon as I find someone to scan one in for me. I have autocrossed the car several times and enjoy driving it more than any other car I have driven. I ended up with this car a little over 1 year ago in a trade for a beat up old blazer that I had $400 invested in. When I got my 924 it was a drivable car which I did indeed drive for 2 or 3 months after I replaced the missing exhaust with a single pipe from the header pipe to a dual tip Monza muffler at the end and replaced the bald tires. Shortly after I started driving it I got stopped by the local law enforcement for loud exhaust and a cracked windshield. He bought the brand new exhaust story after looking at it and must of assumed it was supposed to sound that way, but I did replace the windshield. The windshield was cracked by the previous owner running the drivers front fender into a guardrail causing the hood to open and push hard enough into the cowl to crack the windshield on both sides. The fender was rust free but is severely damaged, the hood is kinked and the passenger front fender has a rust hole at the bottom. The rest of the car is rust free but could use a paint job. The drive tube has a bearing noise and I ended the driving season in Wisconsin last summer when the water pump went out. This summer I did replace the water pump but never drove the car any more than up and down the driveway. I'm planning to do more work on it this winter. Interior wise it isn't real bad other than the dash pad is severely cracked, the center console is broken, there seems to be no controls for the air conditioning (which has no belt on the pump) and the driver's seat has a rip in it. Also the floor gets wet on the passenger side when it rains or I wash it, any ideas on my leak source? My plans were to build it into a street racer look with some custom wide fender flares and fat low profile 16" rubber and race it in local Solo II autocrosses. I just discovered on this web page that I now believe this to be a Martini Edition car, it has the plaque on the center console, the orange carpet and blue and orange trim on the seats. Is this car better off being keep original because of being the Martini Edition? This is my first Porsche and any tips on the rebuild or parts availability would be helpful.

Will be getting a complete going through, and possibly return it to a stock? standard tranny.

I bought my 924 last year for a whopping $700! Although it was running when I bought it, it had a leaking head gasket and a knock in the lower half of the engine. Currently rebuilding the engine to put new life into it. The car is a copper metallic color and it is a California spec car. Have many grand plans for this little sweetheart, will keep everyone updated on the registry.

She is a deep red (almost maroon) color. Not original--she was originally blue. Black interior. Removable sunroof. Automatic. She can fly on the freeway, but I am currently having fuel pump problems, so she hasn't ran in a few days. She has never seen snow. And resides in beautiful Solon, Ohio (about 25 miles from Downtown Cleveland).

Bought the car in May '02. Interior and exterior seem to be in great shape. The car was put in storage in '85 with 60,000 miles, not running.

The red one is fully restored. Having trouble with the AC. The coils get cold but cold air will not come out. Just cool air. might be mixing with heat, not sure. Don't quite understand the vent system yet. White Euro model needs a lot of restoration. Body in good shape, needs paint, interior work, engine work.. Big project!

77nunez.jpg (100872 bytes) after market turbo. I think the car was originally a purple color, gray when I got it and now silver (at body shop for 9 months)! I've had nothing but problems with it since I got it, but have been slowly taking out the bugs. Many electrical nightmares from shorts to fires!!! I for years had problems with oil in my water, which I could not explain since the turbo is not intercooled, but all went away when I replaced the head. I love my car and it's a joy when I race 5.0 mustangs and take them with my little 2.0! Ironic that I work for Ford. Mail me with questions or comments. More pics

She's cherry red with fiberglass ground effects, light tan seats and brown flooring and dash. I am 19 years old and I have only had this car a short while but I love it. There is a small tear in the drivers seat, and some annoying electrical problems other than that she runs great. The electrical problems are the windshield wiper won't turn off unless unplugged, the head lights turn on but they will not raise or lower, and the volt gauge will jump all over the place when the stereo is on, or it will hold at 16 or below 12. But that is it. So far this is the best site I have come across and has proved most helpful, although I would like to find so good parts places here in Alberta. Thanks

bratton.jpg (9900 bytes)I bought my early 1977 924 for $600 in this condition. It has 15” BBS wheels, a beautiful interior except for dash cracks, and an engine that is “supposedly” rebuilt. The body and undercarriage have never had a rust hole, unfortunately the passengers side fender is dented and the control arm is bent. The car ran on one cylinder when I bought it. This turned out to be a bad fuel distributor, which I replaced with a used unit. It also had an aftermarket turbocharger by Windblown Systems, that was partially dismantled, and in questionable condition. I chose to return the car to stock, eliminating the turbo manifold. It also has what looks like adjustable struts in the front. The person I bought it from strictly used it for autocross so the suspension was set up for racing. I hope to learn more about just what all I have as far as suspension modifications. Any tips as of what to look for would be appreciated. Right now the car is a long term project as I try to restore it to “likenew” condition, doing all of the work myself.

The color is the original 77 rally yellow. I don't think there was a lot of them only a few hundred. I upgraded the car to five bolt wheels with the parts from an 82 turbo; also got the leather sport seats and the parts I sold at Hershey from the turbo car then swapped what was left for some money and a standard 924 5 speed trans axle. So the old 77 is a pretty nice car these days. I've owned the 77 since 1985. Just can't part with it

" I think there are about a dozen or so here in Australia.  The limited edition is a cosmetic package only, with the most noticable feature the red, white and blue Martini Racing stripe along the side and the white alloy rims to match the white paint.   The interior carpet is bright red/orange and so are the seat inserts.  A nameplate on the centre console signifies the four world championships.  A lift out sunroof is also a feature. Our car originally came from California and was imported into Australia about eight years ago by the PPO who converted it to RHD.  He sold it to the PO after he had blown the motor.  The PO rebuilt the engine to European specs plus some, it goes like the clappers for a 20 year old four cylinder. The Martini stripes have been polished off, the PO didn't like them!  Can you believe defacing a collectors item?  Mechanically it is in good condition with the new engine and clutch and various other bits in the last few years. I plan on returning it to as close to original condition as I can. I'm hoping that it will appreciate in value as time passes. Here in Australia a 924 will fetch about $10 000 AUS, while an early eighties 944 fetches about $25 000 AUS.  Parts here cost about five times as much as they do in the US.   It's cheaper for me to mail order parts from the US and pay a high freight charge, than it is to buy parts here"

It's earned it's keep at 175,000 miles. I acquired it at 135k and used it hard to 160k with no problems but by this point most of it was pretty tired. Turned it into a project car and rebuilt the engine, skimming the block to take it to 9.8:1( I had to modify the mechanical advance in the distributor to correct mid range pinking), rebored it (bores and skirts were o.k. but top groove badly worn), home ported the head, had the cam reprofiled to 285 degrees, 12mm lift, big throttle body, K&N, sports silencers. This gave a HUGE improvement in torque from 3k upwards, and a reasonable improvement in top end. I have made 6000rpm in fifth which is around 130. The throttle response is also a lot better and it sounds a bit more like a sports car. My 4 speed transmission was clapped so I fitted a five speed, which required a little mallet work to the fuel tank and spacers between the transmission mounts and body. I have 15 inch wheels and with new discs, drums etc brakes are just about o.k. Suspension is next target, it really needs a high ratio steering rack. I have in mind some sort of front spoiler arrangement as well as this area looks very dated now. It has been back in daily use for the last nine months/ 15k miles and is starting to come reliable again as most bits that can fall off have now been renewed! Car has just gone into hibernation while I spend a year setting up a piston factory in China (it wouldn't like the comedy fuel octanes there).

This my first 924 had many problems. Has custom front spoiler, new paint, fuel pump, waterpump, pressure reg. etc. Has the normal wet rug. I'm in the process of selling it, to make way for my 1980 931, in which I hope to race, has the limited package 928 wheels, power every thing, and leather. Head is being worked on rite now.
